“It’s kind of a jerk thing to do, I think, to give someone over-the-counter medicine. It was difficult to incorporate into a cocktail,” says Gary Matthews. The Drumbar bartender is referring to Sarah Syman of Otto Mezzo, who challenged him to create a cocktail with Tums—the antacids traditionally used to relieve heartburn. Nicknamed “blond poison” by the Nazis (her “Aryan” good looks—blond, blue-eyed—belied her Jewish heritage), Stella Kübler-Isaacksohn was a “catcher” for the Gestapo during World War II. Using her cunning, charisma, and connections she ferreted out fellow Jews—people who had gone into hiding in Berlin—and turned them over to the authorities. For this she was promised a bounty of 300 Reichsmark for each person apprehended, and the continued safety of her parents, a promise the Nazis eventually broke (her parents died in the Theresienstadt concentration camp)....

Chicagoans is a first-person account from off the beaten track, as told to Anne Ford. This week’s Chicagoan is Luana Lienhart, 39, a domestic violence counselor. And usually by that point the abuser has systematically cut them off from their support system. A lot of times abusers will sabotage their victims from working outside the home or being financially independent in some way. Sometimes the abuser will destroy passports or photo IDs....
Chicagoans is a first-person account from off the beaten track, as told to Anne Ford. This week’s Chicagoan is Adewole Abioye, West Englewood Branch Library teen-services rep. “One thing that sometimes makes this work difficult is the lack of parental participation. Kids need support, and a lot of them are sort of dumped here at the library. When I was a kid, I went to the library with my parents, and we would sit there and read together as a family....

Julia Thiel The Amora Amaro (left) and Road to Manhattan cocktails Angostura bitters is a cocktail staple, ubiquitous at even the most poorly stocked bars. The recipe, allegedly known to only five people in the world, is a closely guarded secret; the only ingredient listed on the bottle besides alcohol, water, sugar, and “natural flavorings” is gentian (a bittering agent). There are supposedly a total of 47 ingredients in the bitters, mostly herbs and spices—but which ones is anyone’s guess....
Welcome to the Reader’s morning briefing for Friday, February 19, 2016. Is the Trump Tower’s property tax deal too good? Donald Trump hired Alderman Ed Burke’s law firm, which saved him millions of dollars in taxes, according to an investigation by WGN. Trump, still the leading GOP candidate for president, also donated $10,000 to the Cook County Democratic Party while the building was under construction and has since donated $5,000 to downtown alderman Brendan Reilly and $50,000 to Mayor Rahm Emanuel....
The PSA represents a growing trend of court systems around the country using computerized risk-assessment to inform bond-setting and, in some places, even sentencing decisions. Some experts are welcoming the PSA as a tool for potentially counteracting racial and class bias in judges’ bond-setting—a bias that’s seen as contributing to the disproportionate pre-trial incarceration of poor, African-American men in the Cook County jail. But critics are concerned that bias persists even in the PSA’s supposedly neutral algorithm....
Along with every other performance venue in town, Links Hall went dark in March of this year, cancelling the 40 remaining shows of the season and leaving its wood floor minus its customary dust and polish left there by the many bodies rolling across its lustrous surface. To launch its new season in a time when audiences and live performance are reinventing themselves, Links Hall is hosting a 96-hour pop-up performance festival—a four-day blitz of remote collaboration between teams of artists and technicians who have never worked together before and never worked together like this—during a pandemic....
Pegged as the adult card game in which people play a sex-themed variation of “Would you rather?”, Weapons of Mass Seduction picks up where most couples’ games leave off: riding crops, Trader Joe’s, and Orthodox Judaism. Players win points by guessing which sexual act their opponent prefers—ranging from raunchy to ridiculous—with cards like: “Whip opponent with riding crop,” “Apply Trader Joe’s Speculoos Cookie Butter to your body for opponent to lick off,” or “Opponent does taxes, budgeting, or fiscal forecasting while topless with a little calculator and glasses....
Q: I’m sorry if my English is wrong. I’m a gay man writing from Germany, where I am being heartbroken and not knowing how to go on. I’ve been seeing a guy for a couple of months and slowly falling in love with him. “Peter” has always been very open to me about himself, his failed relationships, and his commitment issues. He talks frequently about his ex-boyfriend from five years ago and how being left created a deep fear of being left once again....
